Dyslipidemia and Hematological Abnormalities in Hemodialysis Patients: A Study on the Progression of Chronic Kidney Disease in Karbala Governorate

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a significant global health concern impacting various physiological systems. This study investigates the effects of CKD on lipid profiles and complete blood count (CBC) in hemodialysis patients. The aim was to evaluate the alterations in these parameters in CKD patients undergoing dialysis and to understand their correlation with disease severity. A case-control study was conducted at Imam Hussein Teaching Hospital in Karbala Governorate, Iraq. The study included 80 patients (51 males and 29 females) aged between 21 and 62 years, who suffered from CKD and were undergoing renal dialysis for periods ranging from three months to 15 years. Patients were divided into two groups: those undergoing dialysis for more than a year (40 samples) and those undergoing dialysis for less than a year (40 samples). Blood samples were collected and analyzed for RBC, WBC, Hb, PLT, Cholesterol, HDL, and Triglyceride levels. The findings indicated a clear inverse relationship between CKD severity and mean levels of RBC, Hb, and PLT, with these levels decreasing significantly as the disease severity increased. While total cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and white blood cell count were relatively elevated with increasing disease severity, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels remained stable in this study and were not affected by disease severity. The results of this study indicate that chronic kidney disease affects blood parameters, lipid metabolism, and lipid dysregulation. Therefore, it is essential to monitor lipid levels and blood parameters periodically in dialysis patients due to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and other associated systemic risks.
